Last March, as part of our strict focus on sustainability and responsible sourcing, we announced our support to the IPPAG Convergences Awards, a project that aspires for the development of a “Zero Exclusion, Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty” world. Before we end 2018, as a proud member of IPPAG, we are pleased to share with you the winner of this year’s IPPAG Convergences Awards, WEEECAM.
WEEECAM is a Cameroonian initiative that focuses on recycling e-waste. Solidarité Technologique, a French NGO founded in 2001, launched WEEECAM to establish a sustainable WEEE (waste of electrical and electronic equipment) recycling activity in Cameroon and to demonstrate that this can be a profitable venture in developing countries. This initiative also aims to prevent the constant increase in e-waste and transform them into e-resources.
Based on global studies, e-waste is the fastest growing waste stream and the hardest to recycle properly. If not averted, this type of waste poses a serious threat: it can cause severe health dangers, damage the environment, and has a huge social and economic impact. This is an issue that challenges and questions our lifestyles, our society, and our economic models.
As an IPPAG member, we are committed in raising awareness about WEEECAM’s objective locally. By spreading the news about this initiative, more and more individuals and companies would be better educated regarding the issue of e-waste, which would definitely benefit our generation and the next.
